Volunteer and Tutoring Opportunities
Adult Tutoring
The one-on-one training sessions are conducted using Laubach Way to
Reading Diagnostic Inventory to screen adults and match them with a trained
tutor.
Bi-weekly one-on-one training sessions are conducted using Laubach Skill
Books and supplemental reading. Assessments are made each time a
reading level is achieved. Monthly tutor reports are included in the overall
assessment of the student.
Volunteer tutors must attend two 5-hour training sessions before being
matched with an adult non-reader.
Other Volunteer Opportunities:
Storyteller
Reading to young children is part of the preventive measures used for
modeling good reading habits. The Washington County Literacy Council works
on collaborative projects with local agencies to provide story time sessions for
area youth
Special Projects
Coordinate or participate in one of our special events or promotions
Public Speaking
WCLC receives many speaking requests each year. Tutors and volunteers are
invited to join our "Speakers' Bureau" and promote literacy awareness.
Office
Work on the newsletter The Printed Word, coordinate mailings, make
community contacts, answer phones, update databases. There's always
something to do!
Family and community projects further promote literacy and help break the
vicious cycle of intergenerational illiteracy. We work with various service
agencies and organizations to encourage reading to children and to provide
story times and family literacy activities and resources. Community reading
centers are located throughout Washington, in homeless shelters, community
centers and family practice offices.
Workplace Literacy is an important component of WCLC's mission, and is
vitally needed for a healthy community. Worksite projects may include
one-on-one tutoring, employee literacy assessment and audits, group
sessions, or workshops conducted by trained volunteers.
We also work within the Washington County criminal justice system, providing
tutoring to those who have been incarcerated or on probation in an effort to
decrease the repeat offender rate.
